The Rotary Torque Indicator receives a signal from the idler assembly installed against the bottom of the rotary chain or secondary chain in the drawworks. This assembly acts as a lever (consisting of a free turning hard rubber wheel that deflects the chain and a hydraulic cylinder) that transmits the force applied to the indicating gauge mounted in front of the driller. As torque is built up in the drill string, the rotary chain becomes more taut and presses down on the wheel turning in the idler frame, and increases the psi within the hydraulic piston. This pressure signal is carried from the piston by a high–pressure hose to the dial indicating gauge mounted in the drilling control box/panel.
